POINTERS - Host tree-pinewood nematode interactions: searching for sustainable approaches for pine wilt disease management
 
Abstract
The pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is the causal agent of the pine wilt disease (PWD), and causes high losses in conifer forests throughout the world. It infects trees of different Pinus species, and maritime pine (P. pinaster) ? which is widely distributed in Portugal - is one of the most susceptible species. In addition to the ecological impact, PWN has a high economic impact. Its pathogenicity is not fully elucidated and innovative, holistic strategies and innovative transdisciplinary approaches are needed to understand the PWN pathogenicity mechanisms and to advance new approaches to management. In this sense, the advanced methodologies based on proteomics can further explore the PWN secretome and proteomes of PWN infected and non-infected Pinus, clarify the mechanisms of response to the disease, and can identify biomarkers compounds with important practical applications. Elicitors' application and validation of their mode of action may also contribute to the identification of metabolic pathways involved in resistance/susceptibility and may lead to the development of alternative strategies to fight against the PWD. This multidisciplinary and integrative project will provide new insights into the nature and function of PWN pathogenicity and host resistance proteins and response mechanisms from host trees to PWN infection and elicitors, which in turn can be targeted to the development of practical and sustainable disease management strategies.
