A Logística Militar na Cronística Portuguesa de Quatrocentos

Abstract

A logística militar medieval é um tema pouco explorado, mas que possui grande importância. Sem a logística, sem toda aquela máquina que funciona por detrás de uma expedição, a hoste nunca poderia atingir o seu objetivo, nunca poderia chegar ao local de uma batalha, ou sequer montar cerco a uma cidade fortificada. Por detrás de qualquer empreendimento militar existe a logística, algo que não se vê mas sem o qual a campanha não poderia funcionar. Reconhecemo-lo na necessidade de abastecimento dos exércitos medievais, na coluna de marcha, na organização e localização do acampamento, bem como no transporte de todos os materiais necessários à guerra e à sobrevivência dos homens de armas. Para uma expedição se realizar, os homens necessitam de ser alimentados; a coluna de marcha necessita de ser organizada e conduzida de modo a não encontrar emboscadas ou a perder-se pelo caminho; o acampamento tem de ser devidamente organizado, vigiado, instalado onde haja água, lenha e erva; as passagens de rios, sempre complicadas para os exércitos medievais carregados com todas as suas forragens, implicavam que também nestes momentos houvesse um elevado nível de organização. Através das crónicas iremos observar como a logística funcionava no mundo militar português de Quatrocentos.

The medieval military logistics is a subject barely explored, but with a lot of potencial. Without logistics, without this machine that moves behind an expedition, an army would never be able to achieve its purpose, and will not even reach the battlefield or manage to put siege to a castle. Logistics stays behind any military endeavor, it’s something invisible but without its contribution no expedition will reach success. We confirm it when we observe the supplies that are needed by a medieval army, or the march column, or the organization and location of a camp, as well as the transport of all the materials required to make war and to assure the survival of the soldiers. In order to realize a sucessfull expedition, the men needed to be feeded; the march column needed to be organized and safely oriented, to prevent ambush and to avoid getting lost; the camp had to be organized, secured, well situated with water, wood and grass around the vicinity; river’s passages, which were always dangerous for the medieval armies (carried with all their supplies), also implied a high level of organization. Thanks to the medieval chronicles, we will study how logistics works in the Portuguese military world by the XVth century.
