Paredes habitáveis : arquitectura e espaço a propósito da análise da habitação contemporânea

Abstract

A casa é, desde sempre, tema de pesquisa da arquitectura. Da discussão ao longo da história depreende-se que a questão central reside na organização espacial e funcional, factores que espelham diretamente as necessidades do ser humano e, por extensão as mudanças da sociedade. Esta dissertação propõe uma reflexão sobre a condição actual da habitação, em que aparenta haver uma tendência geral para uma organização de funções nos limites dos espaços. Essencialmente a organização implica uma hierarquia que se define pela distinção entre o espaço vazio e o ocupado pelas funções, na qual se recorre a uma ocultação periferal de todos os elementos essenciais ao habitar. O resultado é um vazio genérico que se encontra delimitado por planos espaciais que contém uma profundidade, escondida ou visível. Pode-se dizer que os limites dos espaços ganham espessura com função, transformam-se assim em paredes habitáveis. O trabalho reparte-se entre uma leitura histórica e actual, entre uma análise escrita e uma análise desenhada, e determina nesta perspectiva a terminologia actual das paredes habitáveis, na condição de organizadores espaciais da habitação. O estudo que se elabora para a caracterização das paredes habitáveis define ainda uma reflexão preponderante perante a condição do espaço na arquitectura.

The house has always been a topic of research for architecture. The timeless discussion of this topic has only permitted to conclude that the central issue is spatial and functional organization, elements which reflect the needs of people and by extension the changes in society. This dissertation proposes a reflection on a current condition of housing, in which there appears to be a general tendency for an organization of the functions within the limits of the space. Essentially this organization implies a spatial hierarchy that defines a distinction between empty space and that which is occupied by the functions, the latter being hidden visually form the former. The result of this practice is a generic void delimited by its spatial planes, which contain a functional depth, either visible or hidden. It can be said that the limits of space gain a function thickness, in which they become livable walls. The study of these elements is divided between a historical and a current view, a written analysis and a drawn analysis, and determines through these elements the current terminology of a habitable wall, within their condition as spatial organizers. Within this elaboration of the characterization of the habitable walls lies a reflection that define the current position of space withtin the field of architecture.
