The interest on the study of the third sector organizations has drawn the attention of a growing number of economists, whose fundamental concern is the explanation of the third sector genesis in the context of the actual economic system. However, the proposed approaches enhance critical frailties that, according to the author, lie in the own methodological limits of the dominant research program. So, in this article, the author vindicates the necessity of a paradigm change, based on different methodological presuppositions that allow the acknowledgment of the role and place the third sector occupies in contemporary societies.
