Internship Reports and Monograph titled: "Nanomedicine: Prospects, Risks and Regulatory Challenges"

Abstract

Este documento está dividido em três partes nomeadamente os Relatórios de Estágio em Farmácia Comunitária e na Autoridade Nacional do Medicamento e Produtos de Saúde, I.P., e Monografia intitulada “Nanomedicine: Prospects, Risks and Regulatory Challenges”. Os relatórios de Estágio foram realizados sobre a forma de uma análise SWOT onde foram explorados os pontos fortes e fracos, oportunidades e ameaças em relação ao estágio realizado. Foi realizada uma análise crítica relativamente à frequência do estágio, integração e interligação da aprendizagem teórica na prática profissional e adequação do Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas à realidade dos estágios realizados.A monografia inicialmente aborda a nanomedicina e posteriormente são explorados todos os desafios no desenvolvimento farmacêutico associados. São várias as áreas científicas que têm significativamente evoluído devido à introdução e evolução da nanotecnologia. Assim sendo, o desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos com recurso à nanotecnologia não é uma exceção. Nesta monografia é abordada a introdução da nanomedicina no mercado farmacêutico e toda a controvérsia associada a diversos termos relacionados com a escala nano. Devido às propriedades conferidas por esta escala, são apresentados os principais desafios atualmente existentes para os nanomedicamentos, quer inerentes ao seu desenvolvimento farmacêutico quer a aspetos regulamentares. Estes são finalmente consubstanciados com a apresentação do nab-paclitaxel, como exemplo de um nanomedicamento.

This document is divided in three parts, namely the Internship Reports on Communitary Pharmacy and at The National Authority of Medicines and Health Products, I.P. and Monograph titled "Nanomedicine: Prospects, Risks and Regulatory Challenges". The Internship Reports were realized in the form of a SWOT analysis, where the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats were explored regarding both internships.A critical analysis was carried out regarding the frequency of the internship, integration and interconnection of theoretical learning in professional practice and the adaptation of the Integrated Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences if to the reality of the internships.The monograph initially addresses nanomedicine and subsequently explored all the challenges in the associated pharmaceutical development and regulatory issues. Several scientific areas have significantly progressed due to the introduction and evolution of nanotechnology. The development of new drug products using nanotechnology is not an exception. This monograph describes the introduction of nanomedicine in the pharmaceutical market and all the controversy associated with several terms related to the nano scale. Due to the properties provided by the nano scale, the current challenges for nanotechnology implementation, specifically in the pharmaceutical development and the respective regulation, are addressed. These are finally consubstantiated by the presentation of nab-paclitaxel, as an example of a nanomedicine.
