Abstract

A nossa tese – A Irrenunciabilidade da Existência: Tomás de Aquino a Partir da Análise Lógica Contemporânea – procura discernir um modo como a metafísica do ser de Tomás de Aquino pode estabelecer um diálogo frutuoso com um idioma filosófico contemporâneo, nomeadamente aquele que é representado pela lógica moderna e pela filosofia analítica. A nossa hipótese será a seguinte: longe de se constituir como um momento do pensar filosófico já datado e superado, a reflexão de Tomás em torno da problemática da existência permanece uma interpelação tão premente e relevante nos nossos dias como o foi aquando da sua enunciação original no século XIII. Neste sentido começaremos por refletir em torno do modo como a relação entre proposições ou as fórmulas lógicas e a existência concreta de indivíduos no mundo foi sendo pensada, quer na lógica clássica quer na lógica moderna.Num segundo momento procuraremos discernir a distinção lógico-formal entre sujeitos e predicados, ao que corresponderá uma distinção ontológica entre objetos e propriedades. A partir daqui passaremos ao modo como se formam atribuições primárias de existência e dedicaremos algum espaço a uma leitura e comparação do célebre argumento de Anselmo e à terceira via de Aquino.Num terceiro momento iremos notar a forma como a revolução tomista se fez sentir no quadro teórico que a precedia, passando pelas dificuldades que um pensamento que atribui um genuíno papel à existência deverá defrontar. Para isso deveremos também lidar com o modo como a existência é habitualmente tratada na filosofia analítica.Finalmente, no último momento do nosso trabalho iremos sugerir um modo de pensar a relação entre a essência e a existência de qualquer entidade e entre esta e o próprio existir subsistente.

Our thesis – The Inexorable Existence: Thomas Aquinas From Contemporary Logic Analysis – seeks to discern a way by which the metaphysics of being of Thomas Aquinas can establish a fruitful dialogue with a contemporary philosophical language, particularly that which is represented by the modern logic and analytic philosophy. Our hypothesis is the following: far from being set up as a moment of philosophical thinking already dated and overcome, the reflection of Thomas on the problems of existence remains as urgent and relevant today as it was at the time of its original enunciation in the 13th century.In this sense we start by ponder the way in which the relationship between propositions or logical formulas and the concrete existence of individuals in the world was thought either in classical logic or in modern logic.Secondly, we will discern the logical-formal distinction between subjects and predicates, which will match an ontological distinction between objects and properties. From here we will proceed to the way in which primary assignments of existence possess and dedicate some space to a reading and comparison between the celebrated argument from Anselm and the Aquinas' third way. In a third moment, we will notice how the Thomistic revolution occurred in the theoretical framework that preceded it, noting the difficulties that a thought that assigns a real role to existence must face.
