Os portugueses na telenovela brasileira: identidade, representação e memória

Abstract

Desde o primeiro contato entre o colonizador português e os habitantes da terra descoberta, uma série de impressões e imagens foram criadas, reforçadas e reformuladas. A ligação histórica entre Portugal e Brasil contribuiu, ao longo destes mais de 500 anos, para a construção de impressões e sentimentos a partir de fatos e personagens apresentados em diferentes suportes, desde a literatura até os mais recentes meios de comunicação. Nesse sentido, também a telenovela contribui para a transmissão das imagens de um povo sobre o “outro” e para a continuação desse mútuo descobrimento. Esta tese de doutoramento busca identificar, por meio da teledramaturgia, qual a representação do povo português ao longo da história do gênero no Brasil. Para tanto, o trabalho foi organizado em três partes, de caráter teórico e empírico, que se complementam. De forma a contextualizar a representação do personagem português antes do advento da televisão, realiza-se, primeiramente, um recorrido histórico pela literatura brasileira, desde o período colonial. Essa leitura é pertinente uma vez que serve como base para muitas das primeiras produções dramatúrgicas televisivas no país. Muitas obras, escritas até mesmo por portugueses que viviam entre os dois países, mostram momentos de grande agitação no Brasil devido à presença de imigrantes, o que se reflete na construção de personagens da literatura nacional. Mais tarde, também a imprensa ganhou grande importância na caracterização do imigrante luso, bem como o rádio. Com a televisão, a representação do imigrante tomou novas dimensões, principalmente no que diz respeito à telenovela, um fenômeno midiático bastante importante no país e de repercussão internacional. Assim, optou-se por realizar uma exposição cronológica dos personagens portugueses encontrados na telenovela brasileira entre 1960 e 2014, tanto nas telenovelas de época como nas contemporâneas. Como uma linha do tempo, a imagem do português, através dos personagens de ficção, se delineia. Ao mesmo tempo que se constatam as mudanças no perfil dos personagens, seja por meio de suas características físicas, comportamentais ou decorrentes das variações dos fluxos migratórios, são levados em consideração aspectos mercadológicos e de consumo do produto telenovela. Desta forma, com relação às obras de época e contemporâneas, observa-se também sua comercialização com Portugal e a influência dessa exportação na inserção dos personagens, bem como as relações culturais, econômicas e políticas entre os dois países. A partir da hipótese de que a representação feita pela obra ficcional carrega características estereotipadas que contribuem para o reforço de uma determinada visão do português na sociedade brasileira, realizou-se uma pesquisa de recepção com brasileiros e também com imigrantes portugueses que vivem no Brasil há mais de três anos. Foram realizados grupos focais em três capitais com índices e perfis diferentes de imigração portuguesa: Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, sendo as sessões estruturadas em torno dos temas utilizados nas reflexões teóricas, nomeadamente as questões de identidade, representações sociais e memória, bem como os usos sociais da ficção televisiva. Os resultados indicam que as telenovelas reavivam o sentimento de pertencimento a uma comunidade luso-brasileira, fruto de uma herança colonial ainda bastante presente no imaginário social. Essas relações apresentam-se de forma polissêmica, já que delas fazem parte tanto sentimentos de integração como de discriminação. Essas sensações divergentes são ora reforçadas, ora diminuídas, conforme influência da mídia, e nesse contexto, também da telenovela, interferindo, assim, na interação e percepção entre imigrantes e brasileiros.

Since the first contact between Portuguese colonizers and the inhabitants of the newfound land several images and impressions were created, reinforced, and restructured. The historical connection between Portugal and Brazil contributed throughout the past 500 years to establish impressions and feelings from facts and characters presented in different outlets, from literature to more contemporary means of communication. In this sense, the telenovela also contributes to the transmission of images of a people as regards to the "other" and the perpetuation of this mutual discovery. This doctoral thesis analyzes, through tele-dramaturgy, how the Portuguese people have been represented throughout the history of the genre in Brazil. To this end, the work was organized into three parts by means of a complementary theoretical and empirical approach. In order to contextualize the representation of Portuguese characters before the advent of television, I initially conducted a historical outline of Brazilian literature since the colonial period. This reading becomes relevant as it established the basis for many of the country’s early television dramaturgical productions. Many works, including some written by Portuguese authors who lived between both countries, indicate times of great unrest in Brazil due to the presence of immigrants, which reflects itself in the construction of characters within the national literature. Later, the press as well as the radio also gained chief importance in the characterization of the Portuguese immigrant. With television, the representation of immigrants donned new dimensions, particularly with the telenovela, a crucial media phenomenon in the country with international repercussions. Thus, I opted for a chronological description of the Portuguese characters found in Brazilian telenovelas between 1960 and 2014, both in telenovelas of the period as well as in contemporary ones. Much like a timeline, the image of the Portuguese characters through fiction is outlined. Concomitant to changes in the characters' profile, whether through their physical appearance, behavior, or stemming from migratory variations, I take into account the telenovela’s market and consumption patterns. Thus, regarding historical and contemporary works I also analyze their commercialization in Portugal and the influence of this export in the insertion of the characters as well as the many cultural, economic and political relations between the two countries. Stemming from the hypothesis that the representation made by a fictional work carries stereotypical traits that contribute to a certain view of the Portuguese people within Brazilian society, I conducted a reception research with Brazilians and Portuguese immigrants living in Brazil for over three years. Focus groups were conducted in three capitals with different Portuguese immigration indexes and profiles: Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, and sessions were structured around themes used in the theoretical reflections, namely questions pertaining to identity, social representations, and memory, as well as the social uses of TV fiction. The results indicate that telenovelas revive the feeling of belonging to a Portuguese-Brazilian community, the result of a colonial heritage still largely present in the social imaginary. These relationships are presented in a polysemyc manner, since they comprise both integratory as well as discriminatory feelings. Divergent feelings are at times strengthened or diminished, according to the influence of the media and, within this context, the telenovela, thus interfering in the interactions and perceptions among immigrants and Brazilians.
