A presença cisterciense no espaço urbano: o caso do antigo Convento das Bernardas de Tavira

Abstract

Os monges cistercienses instalaram-se em lugares isolados, preferencialmente em vales férteis e na proximidade de linhas de água. Por outro lado, nas casas femininas esta procura de isolamento não é tão evidente, verificando-se uma maior proximidade aos centros urbanos. Neste artigo prende-se explorar alguns dos aspectos deste fenómeno, com o objectivo de contribuir para o conhecimento da relação que as comunidades femininas estabeleceram com os espaços urbanos. Para tal, analisaremos um caso específico da presença feminina da Ordem de Cister numa cidade. Trata-se do Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Piedade fundado em Tavira na primeira metade do século XVI.

The Cistercian monks settled in isolated places, preferably in fertile valleys and close to rivers. On the other hand, the nuns have settled closer to the urban centers. Their search for isolation was not so obvious. In this article some of the aspects of this phenomenon will be analyzed. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge of the relationship between the women’s communities and the urban spaces. To this end, we will analyze a specific case of the female Cistercian presence in a city: the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Piedade founded in Tavira in the first half of the 16th century.
