Biography
Elisabete Ferreiro is currently an assistant researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, integrated in the group MitoXT - Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics, headed by Dr.Paulo Oliveira. She graduated in Biology from the University of Coimbra (UC), in 2002, and completed her PhD degree in Biology, also from UC, in 2008. Her main expertise area is in neuroscience and cell biology. Her research in the past years has been focused on identifying mechanisms involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of this neurodegenerative disease. She was also interested in exploring hippocampal adult neurogenesis along with signalling pathways with potential to improve upon it. Her PhD works, supervised by Prof. Claudia Fragão Pereira (Faculty of Medicine and Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra) led to the thesis 'Cross-talk between endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria in the neurotoxicity induced by amyloid-beta and prion peptides. Implications for the etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and Prion disorders'. During her PhD works, E. Ferreiro demonstrated the existence of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress as a major contribution for cell death induced by the amyloid beta (Abeta) peptide and PrP106–126, in both Alzheimer’s disease and Prion disorders. Besides, she further showed the relevance of the communication between the ER and the mitochondria for apopotic pathway. In 2008, E. Ferreiro started her post-doc research program in order to characterize the stem and progenitor properties that contribute for decreased neurogenesis in the triple transgenic mouse model of AD. In 2013, initiated a second postdoctoral program in the group of Dr Ana Cristina Rego (Faculty of Medicine and Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra). During this period Elisabete Ferreiro studied the mitochondrial control of NMDA receptor-dependent calcium rise evoked by amyloid-ß 1-42 oligomers in rat cortical neurons and also evaluated whether hyperglycemia enhances AD pathology by modifying NMDARs signaling and function, and consequently affecting neurogenesis. In 2015, E Ferreiro joined the COST action BM1402, and was an active member and establishing several collaborations and short-term exchanges. In 2017 she spent 6 months at the Achucarro Basque Center (Spain), where she extended her knowledge on hippocampal neurogenesis, and consolidate her ollaborations with experts in the field. Currently, she is currently interested in developing new therapeutic strategies, for other Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a result of her research activity, she has published 32 scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals, with over 2122 citations and a h index of 21.
