Reorganização sufixal no português arcaico

Abstract

A presente dissertação insere-se no âmbito da Morfologia Histórica, com enfoque especial num paradigma sufixal do português arcaico (sécs. XIII a XVI): o da formação de nomina actionis deverbais. Através da análise evolutiva de um grupo de unidades corradicais – governação, governança, governo, governamento – representativo dos sufixos desse paradigma, pretende-se, por um lado, contribuir para a periodização do fenómeno da reorganização do paradigma sufixal formador de nomina actionis deverbais, e, por outro, identificar as motivações que terão conduzido a essa mudança. O corpus recolhido é constituído pela totalidade de ocorrências das quatro unidades lexicais num conjunto de documentos tipologicamente diversificados do período arcaico. A análise dos dados empíricos é levada a cabo sob três diferentes abordagens – interna, cognitiva e sociolinguística - favorecendo uma perspectivação causal multidimensional da evolução linguística. No que diz respeito à periodização, conclui-se que a reorganização sufixal deste grupo de unidades, embora não fique resolvida neste período (sécs. XIII - XVI), tem início e começa a delinear-se no português arcaico. Relativamente às causas da mudança ocorrida no grupo sufixal em análise, verifica-se que existe uma articulação entre as diferentes motivações frequentemente apontadas como causadoras de mudança linguística, nomeadamente os factores internos de simplificação sistémica e de preferência pela transparência formal, semântica e relacional; os factores cognitivos de saliência e percepção; e os factores sociolinguísticos de consciência linguística e de prestígio/estigma linguístico.

This dissertation is in the field of Historical Morphology, with a special focus on the suffix paradigm forming deverbal eventive nouns, for the period between the 13th and 16th centuries. The evolution of a group of words with the same root, – governação, governança, governo, governamento – which is representative of the suffixes forming part of the above mentioned paradigm, will be analysed with the objective of both contributing to the periodisation of the paradigmatic reorganization and identifying the causes that led to the changes verified. The corpus used in this study is the total number of occurrences of the four lexical units in a group of typologically diverse documents from the 13th to the 16th century. The analysis of the data is carried out from three different perspectives – internal, cognitive and sociolinguistic – thus defending a multidimensional approach to the study of the causes for language evolution. As far as periodisation is concerned, it is concluded that the suffix paradigm’s reorganization mirrored in these units does not finish within the stated period, but has its beginning and starts to develop during this period. As for the causes of the change that occurred within the suffix group analysed, we identify the interconnection between the different motivations frequently associated with language change, such as the internal factors of system simplification and preference for formal, semantic and relational transparency, cognitive factors of salience and perception, and sociolinguistic factors of linguistic awareness and linguistic prestige/stigma.
