Abstract A significant part of the costs associated with the operation of a service building is due to the energy expenditure for HVAC. Thus, the need for its reduction becomes important to energy saving and of course, for monetary savings. Among the several constructive characteristics of a building that have an influence on their energy consumption for HVAC stands out its “passive solar design”, its area, properties, solar orientation, shading of its glazing area, the surface constructive solutions coefficient and the thermal inertia of the building. The aim of this paper is to characterize the energy behavior of a service building when subjected to different types of construction in terms of thermal inertia, trying to see if there is a level of inertia more appropriate to each type of use from the building. To implement this study were included two services buildings with very different uses, one with a permanent occupation (a nursing home) and another with intermittent occupancy (a supermarket). For each building, through the modification of constructive solutions, have been implemented three classes of inertia (strong, medium and weak). It was also studied if there is an influence in the presence of freecooling and heat recovery. For this work it was used simulation building energy performance software EnergyPlus. The result analysis was based on annual consumption for air conditioning and its components for heating and cooling. It was considered that each building could have strong thermal inertia, medium or weak and that all this cases could exist or not freecooling or heat recovery or both.
