The issue at hand in this Master's thesis is the assistance of Gulf Oil Corporation to Portugal during the colonial war in Angola. In 1957, was signed the first concession contract for research and exploitation of oil in Cabinda between Gulf and the Portuguese government. With the beginning of the colonial war in Angola in 1961, the Gulf had to suspend their work in Cabinda, when Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) controlled this region. However, few months later, in 1962, Portugal regained Cabinda and tightened security, so the oil corporation could further develop the work. That was the beginning of the collaboration between the two parties. In 1966, Gulf discovered oil in Cabinda and in the same year renewed the concession agreement with the Portuguese government. At that time, Portugal was fighting three wars simultaneously, which required a great financial effort. From that year onwards, in each renewal contracts figured clauses requiring the payment of large sums of money, not found in others contracts signed during the colonial war in Angola. |
