Abstract

RESTRICTIONS AND CONSTRICTIONS – THE DIFFICULTIES OF TECHNICAL TRANSLATIONThe present report is based on a 300-hour curricular internship for the Master Degree in Translation , at the translation company Traversões – Serviços Linguísticos , Lda. , between 15 of September of 2015 and 4 of February of 2016. The objective of this report is to approach the different functional translation theories and apply them to the reality of a translation company , namely to the translation of a user guide. That being said, this report is divided in three sections : the first section relates to the curricular internship at the translation company Traversões. The translation tasks , translation samples , and acquired skills will be presented. The second section is the theoretical section of this report. Functional translation theories , namely the theories of Katharina Reiss , Hans Vermeer , Justa Holz-Mänttäri , and Christiane Nord ; technical texts , technical translation and its characteristics will be presented , as well as brief discussion on translating instructions , and the importance of revision in translation. The third and last section is the practical part of this report. I will present the translation brief – a user guide – and discuss some of the translation problems and difficulties of said translation , as well as some of the difficulties faced during the internship. In conclusion , I present an overall assessment of the internship and of the development of the present report.

RESTRIÇÕES E CONSTRIÇÕES – AS DIFICULDADES DA TRADUÇÃO TÉCNICAO presente trabalho baseia-se na realização de um estágio curricular realizado na empresa de tradução Traversões – Serviços Linguísticos, Lda., com a duração de 300 horas, realizado entre 15 de Setembro de 2015 a 4 de fevereiro de 2016, no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução, sendo um requisito para a obtenção do grau de Mestre. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em abordar as diferentes teorias funcionalistas de tradução e aplicá-las à realidade de uma empresa de tradução, em particular à tradução de um manual de instrução. Assim, encontra-se dividido em três partes: a primeira parte refere o estágio curricular, apresenta a empresa Traversões, bem como as tarefas de tradução realizadas, algumas amostras de tradução e as competências adquiridas. A segunda parte refere a parte mais teórica do trabalho. Serão abordados alguns tópicos, tais como as teorias funcionalistas de tradução, nomeadamente as teorias de tradução de Katharina Reiss, Hans Vermeer, Justa Holz-Mänttäri e Christiane Nord; o texto técnico, a tradução técnica e as suas características, sendo também brevemente abordada a tradução de instruções e a importância da revisão de um trabalho. A terceira e última parte representa o trabalho prático de tradução. Será apresentada a encomenda de tradução – um manual do utilizador – e serão abordados os problemas e dificuldades de tradução do mesmo, bem como algumas dificuldades de tradução ao longo do estágio. Finalizo o trabalho com uma apreciação global sobre o estágio curricular e sobre o presente trabalho.
