SPARK - CLIQUE Problemas de Tradução de Textos de Divulgação Científica na área das Ciências do Desporto em Portugal: John Ratey - Um estudo de caso

Abstract

Este projeto teve como objetivo a tradução parcial comentada, de SPARK – The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, de John Ratey. Neste livro, o autor procura usar uma ‘linguagem que todos entendam’ de forma a tornar o conhecimento científico disponível para o público não especializado. Trata-se, então, de uma obra de divulgação científica com interesse para as ciências do desporto e da educação física, o que permitiu aliar a minha formação de base nessa área e a minha formação complementar em tradução. O projeto inicia-se com uma abordagem ao estado da arte das ciências do desporto em Portugal, e com uma abordagem especificamente direcionada à ligação exercício-cérebro, nomeadamente ao modo como esta ligação tem sido divulgada em livros, em estudos científicos, em textos de divulgação cientifica e/ou em outros textos, em Portugal, de forma a justificar a pertinência deste projeto de tradução. Depois de uma contextualização teórica que aborda a temática da obra, é feita uma breve apresentação do autor, seguindo-se uma caracterização da obra, partindo da forma como está estruturada, passando depois para o género textual dominante e para o registo de linguagem utilizado.Este projeto baseia-se nos modelos funcionalistas propostos por Hans Vermeer e por Christiane Nord e segue a categorização de problemas e de dificuldades de tradução apresentada por Christiane Nord. Estão também presentes os conceitos de estratégias e de procedimentos de tradução propostos por Luc van Doorslaer, com destaque para estes últimos, partindo da classificação apresentada por Vinay e Darbelnet. É também feita uma breve abordagem à problemática ‘Tradutor Especialista vs. Especialista Tradutor’. Em seguida, é apresentada a tradução parcial comentada de SPARK, com a identificação dos principais problemas e dificuldades de tradução, bem como dos procedimentos de tradução usados para resolver todas as questões identificadas. São também apresentadas as justificações para todas as opções de tradução.Segue-se uma breve comparação entre a versão brasileira da obra e a minha tradução. Por último, apresento uma análise descritiva dos procedimentos usados na minha tradução. O projeto reveste-se de um interesse especial para a área das ciências do desporto, justificando, na minha opinião, a tradução integral da obra e, mais especificamente, a divulgação dos resultados descritos no primeiro capítulo de SPARK, junto das entidades responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento curricular no nosso país.

The purpose of this project is the translation, as well as the translation commentary of an excerpt of SPARK – The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, by John Ratey. In Ratey’s work, scientific knowledge on exercise and the brain is made available to the general public through the author’s ‘plain english’ style of writing. SPARK is considered a book of science dissemination especially directed to those interested in sports and physical education sciences, thus giving me the opportunity to use my own training background in those areas in this translation. The project starts with an overview of the field of sport sciences in Portugal, followed by a literature review on the connection between exercise and the brain. This literature review focuses on the way this connection has been discussed in books, scientific studies, science dissemination texts and other types of publications in Portugal, in order to justify the importance of this translation project. Following the theoretical contextualization of the book’s theme, there is a brief presentation of the author. A characterization of the book is then presented, as well as a description of the text genre characteristics and of the language register used by the author.This project is based on the functionalist models proposed by Hans Vermeer and by Christiane Nord, and follows the categorization of translation problems and difficulties presented by Christiane Nord. Luc van Doorslaer’s concepts of translation strategies and procedures are also considered, with a focus on the translation procedures, based on the classification presented by Vinay and Darbelnet. The question of who makes the best translator, the Specialized Translator or the Specialist turned-Translator, is also briefly discussed. The translation of an excerpt of Ratey’s book is presented, always followed by the identification and discussion of the main translation problems and difficulties, as well as by the justification of each and every translation option and procedure. A brief comparison is then developed between the Brazilian version of the book and my own translation. Finally, I present a descriptive and statistical analysis of the used translation procedures. This project is of special interest for sport sciences, justifying, in my opinion, the future work of a complete translation of the book, namely because of the importance of the results presented in the first chapter of SPARK, to all of the people responsible for the curricular building in Portugal.
