This study aims surface modification to cellulose and silica hydrophilic for introduction of new functionalities by grafting method. The process consists of three distinct steps: activation, forming initiators and polymerization on the material surface. The initial activation step is carried out by reaction between the modifying material and TDI; and one of NCO groups of the TDI binds into the structure of the cellulose or silica and the other remains free. The analysis of the FTIR spectra for both materials shows the free NCO band at about 2260 - 2270 cm-1, indicating that activation of the surface was successfully achieved. However, for the cellulose it has been necessary to resort to a larger number of surface characterization techniques to demonstrate the success of the step. The measurement of contact angle value shows that the surface becomes hydrophobic after the first step and TGA analysis also shows differences in the cellulose that reacts with TDI. The second phase of the study is to induce polymerization processes on the surface of the activated material making it operate as a macroinitiator. This step is conducted by reaction of the material activated with tetra butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). For silica, the band corresponding to the carbamate linkage is formed which is visible in the FTIR spectrum at 1732 cm-1. This does not apply in the case of the cellulose, in which the band corresponding to the free NCO decreases but it does not change the band on the connecting carbamate. The second step of the process was still carried out by reacting the amine 1,6 – diaminohexane (HMDA) with activated material which causes a urea bond. This link is visible in the FTIR spectrum for the silica at around 1680 cm-1 for cellulose however the band on the is not noticeable. After the second step using silica as macroinitiator the polymerizing was made using two different monomers: methyl acrylate and NIPAM. The polymerization of the cellulose surface was performed using only the monomer methyl acrylate. For FTIR obtains evidence that polymerization occurred on the surface of both materials. The objectives of this study were achieved, contributing to the development of chemical modification of surface techniques and if you can replace fossil materials for more environmentally friendly materials. |
